A cimbalom band at a wedding is something no sound system replaces: live
music reacts to the room, to the toasts, to the moment when the guests need
lifting out of their chairs. Here is a practical guide to choosing one and to
what the price will look like.

## What makes up the price

A band's fee is not one number but the sum of several items:

- **Number of musicians:** a classic cimbalom band has 4–6 members
(cimbalom, lead violin, contra viola, double bass, sometimes clarinet and
a singer). Every extra member shows up in the price.
- **Scope of playing:** ceremony, guests' arrival, an evening set, playing
until dawn? The difference between an hour's performance and a whole
  evening is fundamental.
- **Travel:** the cimbalom is a large, heavy instrument, so the band travels
by car with a trailer or by van. Distance is charged.
- **Reputation and season:** a summer Saturday with a sought-after band
costs more than a Friday in November.

As an order of magnitude, fees run from the **high hundreds of euros to over
a thousand**. Only a quote for your specific date will give you a real
figure. Ask for it in writing, itemised.

## What to ask a band

1. **Repertoire:** folk songs only, or arrangements of popular songs too?
   Can they play *your* song?
2. **Sound:** do they bring their own PA, or play acoustically? Is your
   venue right for them?
3. **Breaks and timings:** how many sets, how long, what happens between them?
4. **Deposit and cancellation:** a fair band has clear terms up front.
5. **Video of them playing:** the best way to hear what you are buying.

## When to book

The cimbalom-band season follows the wedding season: **spring to autumn,
peaking on summer Saturdays**. Good bands have the attractive dates taken
months or a year in advance. Sort the band out among your first suppliers,
right after the venue.

## Looking for a band?

We are preparing a **directory of cimbalom bands by region**, with videos and
indicative price bands, so you do not have to search half the internet. If
you play in a band and want to be in the directory among the first,
